Spring on the island is awaited eagerly. Tiny flowers show their blooms, and buds swell almost visibly. Trees and shrubs blossom in whites, pinks and yellows, followed by leaves in varied shades of green. Later, banks and meadows are filled with spikes of lupine in colors from white and pinks through deep purple. Galleries and shops open with new merchandise to welcome visitors.

Summer has long been the favored time to come to Deer Isle. Since the 1870s when families arrived by steamer to stay for the season, the warm, comfortable days and cool nights have been a draw for young and old. An occasional foggy day dramatically alters the landscape and provides an opportunity to visit historic sites or to relax with a book from a local shop.

Autumn has a brisk beauty. The days are crisp and sunny, the breezes a sailor's delight. The foliage turns to yellows and golds with highlights of red, always with the contrast of the dark-green spruces, balsams and pines. Bicyclists and kayakers benefit from the reduced traffic. End-of-season sales add to the pleasures of browsing through shops and galleries.

Winter is quiet but with its own appeal. This is the season when residents come together at public suppers, craft fairs, school basketball games and other events sponsored by local organizations. Visitors are invited to join in; several accommodations for lodging and dining are open year round. Activities are publicized in local newspapers and on posters prominently displayed around the island.

We invite you to visit Deer Isle at any time of the year.
