There are numerous events held each summer on Deer Isle.
Among them is the Migratory Birding Weekend in May, the Lupine Festival in June,
then the Fourth of July parade and fireworks and at the end of July is Fisherman's Day. This year the Lupine Festival will
spread over three days. See the schedule below for specifics. Early in the morning of the Fourth of July are the Road Races and Fun Run in Downtown Stonington. The parade is later in the morning in Deer Isle Village. The annual Fish & Fritter Fry starts in the late afternoon on the Stonington Fish Pier followed by fireworks over Stonington Harbor at nightfall. The Fishermen’s Day celebration has become a popular event with a wide variety of activities for the whole family on and around the Stonington Fish Pier. These range from Coast Guard demonstrations to Wacky Rowboat Races to a very spirited Codfish Relay Race. 2008 Calendar of Events |

Consult our local newspaper, Island Ad-Vantages, 367-2200, or their web site, www.penobscotbaypress.com for more current listings, or for events with no listed telephone number. In addition to the calendar listings, there are many activities on the Island. The Opera House
in Stonington is the Island’s year-round movie theater, community coffeehouse, dance hall and professional performance space. Haystack Mountain School of Crafts offers public tours every Wednesday at 1 pm from June through
early September and has evening events that are open to the public during the summer. The many galleries on all of Deer Isle have openings throughout the summer, usually on Sunday afternoons, and the galleries in Stonington have “First Friday Open Gallery Night”
in July , August, September and October. Children’s activities on Deer Isle are low key but adventurous, including hiking along quiet seaside trails, beachcombing at low tide along the Deer Isle Causeway, fishing, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Kids of every age enjoy exploring whimsical outdoor sculptures at Nervous Nellie’s Jams & Jellies (look for the
Grail Castle), taking creative art classes at Seamark Workshops, playing miniature golf at Finest Kind, watching fishing boats unload the day’s catch at various Stonington piers, or discovering the local fresh-water swimming pond. A visit to the Deer Isle Granite Museum and a cruise of Stonington Harbor is enjoyable for both children and adults. Call, or check the web sites of the individual businesses for specifics. Deer Isle and Stonington have very active schools. Both the High School and our new Elementary School have their own websites. Please check each of these for school and local activities. The Elementary School is also home to The Reach Performing Arts Center which is the location for theatrical productions, concerts and other events.
